Eighth grade Communication Arts is the study of reading literature, writing, and presentations skills. Students will apply reading skills by utilizing work knowledge, reading strategies, and evaluating nonfiction texts and literature. Written skill will be enhanced for a variety of writing purposes. Students will be given a spelling list on Monday, with a test on Friday. The writing will focus on expanding vocabulary development and correct grammar usage in written products. Students will demonstrate appropriate presentation skills, as well as listen to, view, and evaluate information. Reading Circle requirements are 14 book reports for the year, any combination of fiction and nonfiction.
The textbook we will utilize for class is Holt’s Elements of Literature, Second Course.
All objectives for this class are aligned with the Common Core State Standards which have been adopted by 40 states, including Missouri. I have included a link for the CCSS.

Classroom Expectations:
1. Be prepared for class.
2. Use restroom and lockers before class.
3. Food, drinks, or gum will not be allowed in class.
4. Classroom disturbances will result in consequences as outlined in the student handbook.
5. Backpacks and purses will be not be allowed in class. Please leave them in your locker or place them in the designated area in our classroom.
These classroom expectations are the same school-wide. They were chosen and
agreed upon by the teachers and administration of Slater School District.
